Atelier S P A C E || Bangkok
6 March @ 7:00 pm - 10 March @ 7:00 pm ICTTHB8000
GAIN CREATIVE CONFIDENCE. Consider possibilities. Try new things. Stay open. In a nutshell, Atelier S P A C E is about helping people find ways to get out of their box. Comfort zones can be places where it seems cozy, but actually, lulls us into a creatively deadening complacency.
Our atelier is about designing a custom framework in each place that will set the stage for really interesting thinking and human connexion to actually *happen*, and DK select very carefully the venues, times of day, and themes so that guests of Atelier S P A C E can experience a relaxed, intellectually stimulating, space for dialogue. Dialogue of the kind with a center, and not sides.
UNIQUE, CUSTOM. It isn’t for everyone, this style of looking for the new and making zines in-situ, on the spot, with those we are inviting to play in S P A C E, but it works for people seeking a personal challenge to try new things and grow. Especially useful for people who have done a lot, careerwise, and seen firsthand that there are massive limits to what anyone can do on her own Yet few ways to invite truly engaging collaboration.
So we created Atelier S P A C E for this set of us. It is best for those who are interested in developing a creative voice, and making what is artful. DK has been practicing this since 2008 in Seattle, Durham NC, and Phnom Penh in workshops for a wide mix of people, and is sharing now through these popup ateliers tools, tips, and anecdotes that equip guests to become more confident creatively.

What’s an ‘atelier?’
Design Kompany is hosting popup zinemaking ateliers. Before fancy academic schools for art and design came along, there were ateliers. An atelier is ‘a workshop or studio used by an artist or designer.’ These are places where you can meet new and different *others* to connection remarkable ways.
ATELIERS, APPRENTICESHIPS & ARTMAKING. Encouraging hands-on learning by doing, the hosts attended to the inner strengths of each participant. Apprentices came. Artworks were made and sold. We imagine artmaking was less commodity-focused (watch the film Posthumous, for a great comment on this) and more about the experience. And for those seeking training, it wasn’t about, one might guess, the expensive tuition fees that come with ho-hum professors (jaded people who’ve forgotten the meaning of their occupation—here I recommend Art School Confidential). Perhaps it was about the magic, if I let myself be uncool and optimistic, of Art. What it can do. How it connects us, across time, and distance. Let’s *make* something. Let’s play?
