‘Strange Geometries’ || Registration

9 October @ 8:00 am - 13 October @ 5:00 pm ICT

$120

THERE ARE LOTS of people who want to write, and say they will, one day, but when? What about practicing your way towards something that is thematically your own? Could you dedicate 20 minutes a week to simply writing? Would it help to be made accountable by knowing there might be other people also asking themselves this question, and waiting to hear from you?

A. Spaice hosts the Cojournal to explore conversations on specific topics in protected-page forums at Design Kompany’s blog. The first cojournal was ‘The Mirror,’ in 2014. Since then, there’s been ‘Self,’ ‘A Nomadic Existence,’ and ‘The Village.’

Our next topic is ‘Strange Geometries.’

Here’s how it works. A. Spaice sends invitations to very specific individuals, based on the theme and the conversations . For ‘The Village’, for example,we are talking together about work, family and relationships. People are writing and sharing as we go. Talking together, as though we’re in a room, but without the burden of having to go into smalltalk. It’s also carefully moderated, and light. Just 12 weeks. No more than 8 seats for this next one, ‘Strange Geometries.’ It’s a very self-selecting group that shows up for these things, so if it sounds interesting to you, the team at DK would welcome you to apply. To apply, use the form below.

How did the cojournal start?

The idea was to design a short, do-able program for people who don’t know one another to explore topics of mutual interest. ‘What if writing could be a shared experience? That was the question that Design Kompany and Kismuth Books wanted to answer. The design and publishing teams worked together to write a series of prompts, and invite people to discover ways to connect that might surprise them.

8 seats. Apply through the form below. Selected candidates will be invited to register.

What’s an ‘atelier?’

Design Kompany is hosting popup zinemaking ateliers. Before fancy academic schools for art and design came along, there were ateliers. An atelier is ‘a workshop or studio used by an artist or designer.’ These are places where you can meet new and different *others* to connection remarkable ways.

ATELIERS, APPRENTICESHIPS & ARTMAKING. Encouraging hands-on learning by doing, the hosts attended to the inner strengths of each participant. Apprentices came. Artworks were made and sold. We imagine artmaking was less commodity-focused (watch the film Posthumous, for a great comment on this) and more about the experience. And for those seeking training, it wasn’t about, one might guess, the expensive tuition fees that come with ho-hum professors (jaded people who’ve forgotten the meaning of their occupation—here I recommend Art School Confidential). Perhaps it was about the magic, if I let myself be uncool and optimistic, of Art. What it can do. How it connects us, across time, and distance. Let’s *make* something. Let’s play?
