SUMMARY:Tokyo International Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:A major film festivals with international films. Plus of course Japanese cinema\, animation and the usual things. This seems to be something that people who want to get into film\, are in film\, or are nerdy about film\, will be able to enjoy because they get to talk film\, and be around film people\, and watch films. I remember going to a short film festival once in Tokyo\, many years ago. I like shorts\, but that’s cool\, they don’t always have to be short film festivals all around the world and stuff. Sharing in case someone wants to know about TIFF.

SUMMARY:Arte Tokyo
DESCRIPTION:Tokyo’s government-sponsored cultural festival combining visual art\, theatre\, music and other creative forms across multiple venues and public spaces. The idea looks to be something of gathering up what is going on for the people who care about contemporary art\, and especially to see what theater\, music and younger communities are up to and share those things with the people who come to the website to find out. Just my guess.

SUMMARY:Art Taipei
DESCRIPTION:Taiwan Art Gallery Association is hosting an Art Fair in Taipei. \nHaving experienced the city of Taipei for the first time this year\, DESK can vouch for the place’s vibe and we felt a genuineness in the way people care about art\, design\, and making. In a way that feels more like just a part of how things are rather than a spectacle to behold. There were things to try\, things to ake\, things to do\, but these were found everywhere and didn’t have to be packaged and put into a ‘white cube’…. like the gallery scene can veer towards a little too soon. Things get out of hand and esoteric real fast. Guilty of this\, in the first four or ten iterations of Design Kompany. I understand we get lofty about art\, ideals\, existentialism. I also know\, ‘No one cares.’ \nPhoto: Art Taipei\nWhat people care about is their own experience of art\, and for that\, I think I would look for things that optimize for people to interpret what they wish\, as and how they want to. \nRepresentatives from the Art Taipei event write\, ‘ART TAIPEI was established in 1992.’ This year\, a central focus for them is to show people how the city can have “Art and Technology Symbiosis.” Honestly\, I don’t think they need an event for that\, just have more people pop in the way I happened to. It’s a cool blend of very old and modernity without the show-off quality that some modern cities can have. (Let me say Taipei contrasts in this way with\, say\, San Francisco\, which was boring in 2026. Maybe because it wants to do too much with being bright and shiny\, I feel. Maybe because I was last there in 2014 and things were more optimistic\, Stateside\, then.) \nI know that art galleries are places to buy and sell just like the big onilne marketplaces or big box stores where I come from or\, well\, everything now. It’s all about buying and selling\, but it… doesn’t have to be. \nOther things have value. Time. Yes. \nTime\, for example. Time shared with people you care about. Getting to know people better so you start to care. These things. I am not going to turn this event listing into a philosophy piece\, but I have a feeling you can get some of that kind of value by interacting with anything that happens in Taipei. \nLet me spell this out. Sure\, I know that the art world has a thing about selling massively expensive things for people who want to ‘invest’ in art\, but that’s not the reason I suggest checking out this fair\, if you go. I suggest it because it’s in Taipei\, and there’s a world of experiences outside of the halls\, too\, that feel more real\, I found\, than other places in the region can that try to stage an art event\, like Singapore\, which was shiny back in January when I went for their Art Week events. But ultimately apart from the food and people who have a lot of heart\, I didn’t feel the experience in SG was worth it–if you want to go to a big art fair\, skip Art Singapore\, go to Art Taipei. That’s my take. \nFor info on the fair\, see info here… https://2026.art-taipei.com/

SUMMARY:Big Love at National Taiwan University
\n\n\nProgram Introduction\n\n\nThere is no right or wrong when it comes to love. \nFifty brides flee their wedding day. To escape an arranged marriage\, they cross the ocean in their wedding gowns to Italy for refuge; while fifty abandoned grooms are closing in. When love becomes a command and freedom becomes a luxury\, how can a bride with nowhere to escape resist fate? The inspiration for the work comes from the Greek tragedy “The Prayer Woman.” \nBig Love is about power and obedience\, desire and fear\, men and women: how can one fight violence in unequal relationships? Surely a big question. Can love overcome fear? \nFB: https://www.facebook.com/NTUDramaTheatreProduction \nIG: https://www.instagram.com/ntudt_prod \nTickets: https://www.opentix.life/event/2095689964381159424 \n  \n

SUMMARY:George Town Literary Festival
DESCRIPTION:Fun literary festival that we’ve personally participated in\, long time ago now\, but it was welcoming and open and DESK loves that. The 2026 theme\, Cosmopolises\, aims to explore cities as places where languages\, cultures and histories intersect. Having personally visited several times\, I feel Malaysia is a good place to go if you’re into multicultural locations\, so that makes sense for a theme. What I like the most about this festival is that it’s part of a citywide experience\, so you don’t just have an isolated thing going on with a bunch of literary snobs. Rather\, it’s integrated into the experience of everydayness which is what makes it less pretentious than many things like this.

SUMMARY:Kuala Lumpur Art Book Fair

It looks like their goal is bringing together independent artists\, illustrators\, designers\, writers\, photographers\, printmakers and small publishers\, not too far off the mark from what we aim to do with our zine community Art & Copy\, which is why this one got DESK’s attention. Artist-book and self-publishing culture. Art and writing. It’s going to be for artists\, writers\, illustrators\, zine makers\, independent publishers\, designers\, photographers and art-book collectors.
