S P A C E | Malmö, ‘Vakt’
The season: autumn. The place: a boat harbor in Malmö. The reason for being there: to get away from everything and everyone and be alone, good and alone, for a solid stretch of time. There was a boat that had an owner that was cool with letting the space, for not that much, week-to-week. So DK went, to see what might happen. Even in the midst of nowhere, though, with gales and minus seven degree temperatures, and in the place that you never imagined you would have to engage with smalltalk conversation, you do, you must, and you will. Tarot cards came out. Vodka. People going to shop for yachts. A couple of youngsters trying to make money for the day by doing some cleanup work. The women who lived together on E. The sauna, the boat house, the rulebook, and the eye: ‘Who are you, stranger, and what exactly are you doing here?’ You try to tell them you’re writing… that’s a lunatic’s thing to say. You get a little iffy about smalltalk, then. But then, you roll into an unexpectedly refreshing conversation with one of the rotating guards. This is that, transcribed. With pictures. A work of creative nonfiction by Dipika Kohli. Set in autumn in Sweden, 2015.
