Thanks for checking out this link.

Welcome to my studio.

This is Design Kompany, or ‘DK,’ as some have taken to calling us since we got started in 2006 in Seattle.

That was when Akira and Dipika set things up for the whole ‘let’s just see what happens’ thing that you sometimes have to do when you realize you don’t want to go to the 9-5 lifestyle, anymore. And circumstances and things lead to other things, don’t they? I really like this quote by George Bernard Shaw:

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the ones who look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them: GBS.

I guess that making the cirucmstances I personally want (designing space for remarkable serendipitous connexion amongst people whose paths might not have crossed), is why we started up our salons, ateliers, and workshops. Some of my favorites have been:

  • ‘N’ Hanoi: NARRATIVE, which has a selfie on this page.
  • ‘Beauty: What is it? Who gets to decide?’, a salon that happened when D22 was new, here in Phnom Penh. We were thinking we’d start a new bar and call it D222.
  • #durhamtweetup, this one was Stateside, when we returned to the Triangle after a 10-year jaunt to Ireland and Seattle in search of new things. The tweetup was a way to get more than 500 people together in a newish bar that could hold all of us, and some food trucks came around, and that all happened because of collaboration with a foodie and the events coordinator of the local independent magazine, Indy Weekly. A lot of fun, sharing, conversation… it was the start of things to come, but I didn’t know it, at that time

Events, salons, workshops, ateliers

If you got the link to this page, it means that I think you would probably fit right in with one of our real life salons. These are the things that are currently happening. We’re interested in finding people to connect with through our online and offline spaces, for sure. But not just anybody. We really want to discover people who are interested in spaces for ideas, to try things, to learn from other viewpoints, and to show up a little bit more often than, say, someone who is just browsing the internet looking for something to kill time. I know that might sound da little callous and harsh, but we have discovered when we are setting our intentions more clearly, through the theming of events, through asking for people to purchase tickets ahead of time, and for sending agendas that genuinely set the stage, it gets more interesting, on the day, and at the time. Which is important, because time is our most valuable asset. Attention =  time.

S P A C E the magazine

Also, we maintain a pretty in-depth online conversation in forums with people in our S P A C E community. That’s an international and eclectic group, and we are always welcoming people who are curious about ways to engage more deeply than the banal encounter that leads to… nothing exciting.

So yeah.

If you are curious about S P A C E do subscribe. This is the page where you can join and become a member, with all the benefits, right away. A lot of special invitations come through exclusive invitations, here, for members who have been conversing with us meaningfully for 6 months or more. You can imagine what that might feel like, being in a community for that long, that shows up here and there with things to say that go beyond a weird and faceless little ‘like.’ Know what we mean?

Keeping in touch ambiently

Curious? Do add your name to our 2018 mailing list. We do have a couple of social media things but they aren’t that exciting for us because it is turning into a place where exhibitionism and narcissism seem to be getting in the way of real connection. That’s our feeling, over here, anyway. Better to select a couple of people to keep in touch with more deeply, more personally, and over a longer stretch of time. After all, through progression and development only can we get to where the good stuff is. And that’s the whole point of it, for us… the point of design, of spacemaking, of connection-setting-up, and of linking people together in hyperlocal narratives through creative nonfiction or the real-life events. To get to the good stuff. If we don’t, we missed the mark.

Many exciting things ahead…

Here’s to the journeys, the new and the next.
