Template Design for ‘Art & Copy’

It’s been a long journey to try to find ways to get us talking, talking together, talking together while also making zines by hand, and also, sharing the highlights of what people opt to share with the wider world through the subscriptions. It’s not easy to connect us. It’s not even easy to simply connect. Maybe this has to do with the fact that in 2025, we are so isolated, in our digital worlds, away and apart from teh real world ones that used to be more easy to tap into where you run into something new, turn a corner ,and voila, something is there that you had no idea about and it sparks a very new, very different sort of tour through the next chapter of your life.

‘Every time you read a book you say that,’ one of my old friends in high school said to me, if I said I had just completed a new book.

I’d said, ‘That book changed my life.’ She was right; I said it a lot. Maybe I said it a lot, though, because I was a teen then. And that was why each new thing was so very powerful and landed very impactfully on me. I was impressionable, mostly quite sheltered, and definitely unaware of so much of so many things in the big wide world. Naturally.

TRAVEL. Travel was a way to change this and introduce new and different ideas into my world, the changing world that chagned again when I found a new book, a new person, a new place, a new occasion. I saw it was very important to me to keep moving and learning and that was the priority, for me, for the next twenty years. At the time of this writing, I’m cozy and comfortably relaxed with all of that having gotten done and feel ready to share more about what it takes to set things up to get ready to be open. I know it’s very esoteric and wild-eyed to want people to have a better time enjoying their everyday lives through the serendipity of chance encounters and realize beautiful moments together to talk, talk together about what feels right in that moment, and keep things light and relaxing. But I will try.

Art & Copy is a monthly, as it was before, but it’s now going to also be a digital zine instead of just the four copies I make and share with people who come to the very small conversation parties I like to host in gardens and cafes. I guess it’s an iteration on the other zine, S P A C E, but it’s different, too. It wants to be about you, your changes, your growth, your explorations, and your ideas about how you might try opening a brand new door. Because, as they say, nothing changes if nothing changes.

Art & Copy

It’s a 16-page, A6-size zine published every month, with our Art & Copy International Zine Club members[$].

Why this title?

‘It’s actually the name of a movie, a really old movie that no one seems to have heard of. I was thinking someone ight mention it when I shared the zines, but no one has so far. I always liked the short and sweet and to-the-point nature of the title. I know that was about the advertising industry. So obsolete, but zines are new and now. I figured why not give it this title.’

Why a zine?

Simpler and more fun than running blogs and microblogs, because you get to pass them out in person in real life at events, she says.

‘The media industry has changed so much, and ‘Art & Copy’ is our response to making the best use of small-scale, human-to-human distribution channels work well in the way that community newspapers used to work well: one conversation, at a time.’
