Before you press ‘back’ because that sounds super hard, trust me when I say, this can be fun and not that hard, too. It’s about easing into it.
So here is The Mirror. Time, space, and reflection. Making time. Making space to get to the part of the day or week or month that you can say, ‘Let me reflect. Let me introspect.’ I have to admit that some of the time I run into old acquaintances who really want to know what it is that helps me stay ‘so focused, so passionate!’ when it comes to making what I make, in the ways I like to make them.
Not sure if I can really tell them anything other than the real truth. I really think about it. A lot. I don’t make a decision without thinking about it for a really long time, sometimes more than I should, but when I’m able to, I just put some space in there and get away from it and try to get some perspective. I’ve taken many long trips to do tha tin my life, three months or two weeks or ten days. I always bring my notebook. Sometimes these notebooks contained loose pages, pages that I had kept around, becuase they reminded me of wehre I’d been. All of the tools that helped me stay the course and ‘find myself’, as some say, but that’s really making light of the big work of ‘looking deeply to uncover who you are’ which ultimately is what will help you design your life because, you know, it starts with
knowing what you like.
For Mirror, it’s a slightly different approach than the other projects here at Design Kompany. It’s not as interactive and there’s only a little bit of back-and-forth and it’s up to the participating communities to decide how much they want to interact with me or one another. Mirror is a place but it’s a twelve-week temporary one. Where reflection and introspection an happen in a group or individually or whatever people prefer. This is because it’s very personal, of course, and not sharing is perfectly okay. There are twelve emails that each contain a particular exercise I’ve tried or created for people who were working with me back in the day DK was a brand identity studio for clients in Seattle. In those days, you could still find projects for people who wanted ‘a website, a business card,’ and even ‘letterhead and business envelopes.’ Imagine! So I saved these up and now they’re The Mirror‘s eWorkshop 12-week package, for you to try wherever you are, through the internet.
