Fun is the point of it’

A rebrand for Aerial Treecare

‘Timeless and classic design’

Working with small business owners is comfortable for us at Design Kompany, since that’s what we are, too. A long time back, when the studio had relocated from Seattle for a bit of sun and rekindling with old ties in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, something cool happened. We got a request to do a rebrand for a company that took good care of trees. Old trees. City trees. The trees on the sides of roads. The maintenance of those, and expertise required to know what to do in all kinds of situations, rested with Aerial Treecare’s owners, in some cases.

They were independent contractors, in need of a standout design for their website, and when we talked, we understood that the best way we could help the owners was to help them find a unique value proposition – one – to focus on. That would be their point of differentiation, and how we could focus our effort on a topnotch, relatable, design. A design that would be its own thing that held authenticity. This meant going through our process to uncover key values, then explore for a concept, and design something that matched that, in a set of iterations and rounds of ideas. We did that and we got places.

That was 2013.

Optimizing for fun

I remember it because it ended with a tree climb. I have never enjoyed myself so very much on a project as that. Hoisted, then, up in the air!, talking away, on the branches, like it was right out of The Baron in the Trees. Aerially, I took a look around. It was sort of like being on the big swings at an amusement park, but it was nothing like that, at all. That day there were five of us, hanging out, in the up. I said, ‘So. This canopy. This is your office?’

‘Yes. Yes it is.’

‘Marvelous.’
