「The San Francisco Zine Festival」、「The Festival of the Photocopier」(メルボルン)や 「Oulu Arts Festival」に出展する。
Back in 2019, I was in Japan, on a brisk, compressed tour that I was wishing was more lengthy and slow but it wasn’t. I couldn’t make zines, but I could go back in time and remember parts of the trip while in lockdown during the early part of the pandemic. So I did. I thought back to the time we—me and my team—got to Shirahama in Izu. I originally designed this issue during the pandemic going through archives and finding my scribbles and photos from then and there.
Now, mere days ahead of embarking on another Japan trip, this time much longer and more focused, for Atelier S P A C E | ‘The Way,’ thinking about the travels to come soon, I’ve updated it a bit with some more words and removed other ones, to streamline it in a way that makes sense for where I am right now.
Memory lane is for everyone, at times
The trip was pre-pandemic, and the issue itself had so much optimism in it. There was this lightness to it that I’ve forgotten about, in the years since the pandemic began. It was nice to go through the files and remix it a bit, keeping all the photos from Boss’ original set that I published in S P A C E. S P A C E is a zine I make every week. I guess I like sharing the process as I’m making things, something that an art critic pointed out in a review of my work. It’s on my reviews page at my personal site; I remember how it felt to first read this review. I was surprised to see that being transparent about the process of making was something she noticed; I had not. I think that’s why it’s amazing to have your work seen by others. They tell you what it is, and what it says ot them, about themselves. This is art’s work, I feel. Showus who we are. I’m not the first to say that. I heard the line said on stage, ‘Man and Superman,’ Bernard Shaw, and felt resonance.
Nice when this happens.
Art for art’s sake is one way to think about ‘making,’ and another is ‘expression.’ Neither of those quite fit for my own personal goals to keep going with things I make. Art—or the design process, as is the case here at DK—can show people who it is they really are, that’s!… That is my motivator. It is the creative process’ capacity, and great gift, I feel. So when people ask me, ‘What is this?” or ‘How will this make my life better?’ I can answer it now. It’s going to show you you.
Not the you that you curate for the world to see. But the you, that you are, within. Honestly, clearly, and without bells and whistles. No wonder it’s only 1 in 100 people who work with DK, lol. That stuff isn’t easy to start on, much less, to finish. But it’s fascinating, this journey towards Self.
See what making space can reveal to you about… you.
