The new issue of our series is ready to share. It’s called ‘Saudade.’
Just thinking out loud, some of you—some of us—are on the road right now, others might be thinking of it, and still others have just returned. When we go, where we go and why we go are all variations on the theme of movement.
A project underway as I write this, ‘The Way’, aims to look into this, and invite, and include, those who may cross paths with me into a conversation. Connecting the world, one designful moment at a time: that’s the idea, for Atelier S P A C E. Speaking of which, the other day, I remembered a story that the father of a family I was a part-time tutor to when I was studying in Kyoto had said about Bashō. As in, the poet. Introducing ‘Saudade’
This issue is Volume II in the S P A C E | Autumn, ‘Curiosity’ series.

This collection of original works explores the Portuguese concept of saudade, capturing the complex emotions of ‘missing someone or something that is no longer present.’ I get into the writing and write, in this issue, weaving old stories on the hooks of the theme of saudade.
Which is when, apparently, you’ll have simultaneous yet also conflicting emotions of nostalgia, longing, and melancholy. It’s her uniquely modern aesthetic, applied to a re-interpretation of what’s a quite universal, and timeless concept. A reviewer might say, ‘Whether seeking a moment of introspection, inspiration, or an ephemeral escape, “Saudade” provides a diverse range of words and images, curated to invite you to explore complexities of memory and our changing relationships with what we wish to hold, or let go, or both.’
