Welcome to !*
Are you finding it boring and banal to meet people now?
Do you miss true connection?
DK make S P A C E for you to find remarkable connection.
SPACEMAKING. IT IS NOT EASY. To find the space and time to go out into the world and discover. Why? It’s been programmed, hasn’t it, into us, that there is so much to be scared of. To be wary of. Fear culture goes to our heads, and guess what, we become anxious. That is the problem we are trying to work with: how to create safe, inviting spaces for us to learn about new people, and new places, within the confines of S P A C E. ‘It’s exclusive and inclusive at the same time,’ said AMK, who was visiting Phnom Penh for something that had professed to make room for real connection, but wasn’t making good on that promise, and that was why she and DK found one another curious and met for a drink and a very long chat. ‘Design is about making what you want, isn’t it?’ we conferred. Designers, artists. ‘Let’s design space for truly remarkable connection.’ And so the new chapter, S P A C E, and specifically, spacemaking for remarkable human connection, became our focus, from 2016 on. Prior to this, DK was the usual design studio: consulting on design thinking, a natural segue from the earlier days of brand identity design in Seattle and other cities far, far from where we are at the moment: Cambodia’s Phnom Penh. (‘Why Phnom Penh?’ ‘Because it’s new!’)
METHOD. ZINES. SALONS. ATELIERS. Esoteric essays, jazz shows, design gigs. The form will vary, but the idea for DK is to gather us, those of us who might not have otherwise met, especially, and discover the remarkable moment together. On the spot. This might be light and casual, like simply a space to write into, like online forums. Or more tangible, like the zines series we make with participating guests at our moving workshop Atelier S P A C E. Or new, cocreated stream of consciousness poetry, or an art show reception curated for a member, an eBook or an anthology of some of S P A C E members’ insights, or a design project we work on making together. It’s open ended. But the method is the same.
Frame a space, for play.

Influences: situations, drift, chance, and moving through time and space
DRIFT, NOMADISM, travel, architecture, design, branding, and journalism. That’s our background. We make space, now, for you to try new things, in a kind of roving, popup, short-form jam session in a… Um… Petri dish. Small in scale, tight in scope. For DK, the purpose is to show up, and dosomething. Try. Learn. Try again. Together. Is this installation art? I dunno. But as experiments go, we don’t want to get too caught up in outcomes, rather, to simply set a stage for what might pop out, the remarkable, the beautiful, the a-ha, the unexpected.
Niels Bohr said, ‘How wonderful, that we have met with a paradox. Now we have some hope of making progress.’
DK like that idea, very much. He also said, ‘No, no, no. You’re not thinking. You’re just being logical.’ And he figured out the anatomy of the atom. Let’s suspend the fixation on productivity, right-ness, and covering up insecurity with a fat blanket of important sounding titles, and ten-dollar ill-fitting and phoney sounding words, can we? Let’s end narcissism, toxic masculinity and the problems that are created when we don’t make a space to consider other viewpoints. Can you accept the possibility that you might be changed by what you hear? (That is, after all, the definition of listening.) Did you catch me?
Receptiveness to the possibility to be changed by what you hear.
Can we design for that?
For optimizing listening, learning, co-creation, and the new kind of design?
I think yes.
I think we can.
Here’s a selection of our past salons, workshops, ateliers, spaces where we have hosted conversation installations, and a few S P A C E zines. Why make S P A C E? For us to connect and interconnect us. For that kind of spacemaking
NEW. Why make space? To invite people to consider new people, new thinking, new perspectives… and new possibilities. This leads to breakthroughs, to serendipitous encounters. And, to innovation. Which is what we need more of in the world, we believe, and want to encourage others to consider old problems with fresh ears and new eyes. It is possible to break out of boxes: but we have to make space to allow it. This takes practice, of course, but sometimes, it takes just experiencing a new way. People have taken pages from our events, workshops, and salons and told us they’ve applied them at work teaching, or in corporate jobs, or even in how they relate to members of their families at holidays. Making space can look like a lot of things. For us, it’s about inviting fresh thinking, new people, and including the possibilities of *anything can happen*. We’ve been called Surrealists. We’re practicing at shaping the S P A CE loosely, so that the ‘a-ha’ breakthrough moment can *happen*. The geometry of space is the set of all points in that space.

MEET US IN S P A C E.
- S P A C E is a print zine.
- It is a weekly.
- It is also an online magazine, sent on Tuesdays to inboxes around the world.
- We’ve been sending S P A C E since 2014 to members of our community, which is turning into quite a great conversation now.
- We have been talking more deeply in protected-page forums together.
- Now we are making real life ateliers, Atelier S P A C E.
ATELIER S P A C E. We are making popup zine ateliers in different parts of Asia and Europe, connecting people in real life spaces. We are bringing together the best of all our 20 years’ experience in: journalism, branding, design, and facilitation of workshops and conversation salons to make Atelier S P A C E. See our itinerary here. A zine. A salon. A moment of conversation. Or a breakthrough of something that we don’t even know what it is yet. Uncertainty, ephemerality: these are real quantities to be contended with. Let’s embrace them. Let’s play?
