There was a time on this blog I wrote about ‘Time to Go’ and put a picture from Chocolat. I wonder if the folks who read DK’s blog in 2009 in Seattle would remember it, if I told them about it, today.
The going where you go: the creative process is this
One of the best parts of the creative process is when you make a kind of accidental gesture with a brush (or pixelated one), and then, go, hey, that’s kinda neat. While from my old studies in color and theories of how to make colors go nicely together, I would have never put these different reds together, I felt like, somehow, it worked.
There was a pop and an unexpectedness to seeing this color in shades against itself; I wanted to somehow find the right set of pages to put into the zine to make it work with the idea of the cover. I admit it’s esoteric, often, around here, but I am that way. I also think there’s a small percentage of people (1%)who appreciate this kind of stuff. People who will know who Mark Rothko is, for example, or, if they google, will be like, ‘That’s neat.’ I liked Rothko ever since I saw his paintings in museums in NY when I was studying art at Pratt for a short, but packed, set of time in my younger years.
There was all kinds of opportunity there and so much to take in, visually (and acoustically; this was where I had my best part-time job, in jazz). Life takes you to interesting places if you let it. Unexpectedly, if you’re open to the chance of being swayed, inspired, mystified, curious, and open to possibilities.
Anything is possible.
